    1. Positively ChargedThe Summer SOLE program has started. Students have been able to participate in activities other than what is usually offered during the school year such as making t-shirts or going on nature walks. They seem to be enjoying the program and have some fieldtrips scheduled also. 148 students were in attendance today and more to come.
    2. Public Participation
    3. Student AchievementLooking at grades, we would normally see grades decline as the school year progresses and classes accelerate into the 3rd and 4th 9 weeks, but last years grade distribution shows that we have made significant strides in the 3rd and 4th 9 weeks to reverse some of the trends we were seeing in the 1st and 2nd 9 weeks of the school year. Looking at benchmarking, we have to discount the data from the beginning of the school year when distant learners were testing at home and instead look more at the data from mid-year when students were benchmarking in-person. The data shows that distant learners are generally outperforming the in-person learners. Once the GSA data is published, we can discuss the end-of-year data.

  6. Reports of Committees
  7. Superintendent's RemarksLast week Monday, we presented our ESSERF 3 plan to Superintendent Burch and staff. They liked our ideas and we received good comments and feedback on what to discuss and how to present to the public. A comment on the opioid lawsuit was in the Charleston Gazette-Mail recently. Cabell County and the City of Huntington sued 3 distributors saying they were reckless and caused their community a tremendous amount of stress and funding problems. The defense has replied saying that there are many community programs that already address these issues, but they fail to see that many of the children that are affected by opioids will probably end up in the special education program, which is not fully funded by federal or state monies. With 3,100 special educators in West Virginia last year, only 300 were paid for by grants, leaving 2,800 in the state aid formula. Out of the 2,800, 900 positions were funded by the counties themselves. We hope people start to see the gravity of the issue so we can work towards solving it.
