Board of Education of the County of Roane

  2. Presentations
    1. Positively ChargedStarting with fall sports, football finished third in regular season rankings. All-conference first-team nods went to Brandon Richardson, Jacob Bunner, Sawyer Hunt, Clay Walker, and Lane Watson. We had a first-team all-state nod for Jacob Bunner and Brandon Richardson earned second-team all-state, and Lane Watson and Cobun Cottrell earned honorable mention. In volleyball, Mahailey Nicholson earned second-team all-state and honorable mention went to Piper Harlan. The golf team placed 8th in the state with Carder Kinder, Lucas Hall, Daren Raines, Jayden Webb, and Cody Nichols. For winter sports, in boys basketball, Cameron Cumpston earned an honorable mention all-state. For wrestling, Tyson Pena was 6th at the state meet, Tommy Evans, Mack Webb and Bradley mace were state qualifiers, Grayson Steele got 4th in state, and Lane Watson is a state champion. For spring sports, in softball, first-team all-conference went to Mahailey Nicholson and Piper Harlan. Boys track ranked 12th place in the state as a team. Paul O'Brien got 8th in 110 meter dash, Lane Watson got 3rd in state for 200 meter dash and 110 meter high hurdles and was state champion for the second year in a row for 300 meter hurdles. Jacob Bunner participated in shot put and Brandon Charles participated in pole vault and got 7th place place on long jump. Paul O'Brien, Brandon Richardson, Shay Harper, and Lane Watson got 8th in the 4x100 meter relay. Nick Taylor, Jimmy Lance, Shay Harper, and Noah Bragg competed in the 4x800 meter relay, Noah Bragg, Jimmy Lance, Nick Taylor and Noah Pena competed in the 4x800. Girls track earned 13th place in the state. Hope Mason competed in the high jump. Josie Cox got 3rd place in 100 meter hurdles, 3rd place in 300 meter hurdles, and 7th place in pole vault. Casey May got 2nd place in pole vault.
    2. Public ParticipationRCHS Baseball Coach, Orland Huffman, and RCHS Baseball family members, Michelle Ash and Shelba Fountaine, addressed the baseball concerns brought to the board at the last meeting. Lori Cottrell, Principal at Spencer Elementary School, spoke in support of the adoption of i-Ready as a benchmarking and screening tool.

      1. Rescind action to transfer Jonathan Goff to Teacher / Music, Walton Elementary / Middle School, and instead restore to Teacher / Music, Spencer Elementary School per WV Code 18A-4-7a (m) (6)

    6. Selection of Benchmark and Screener PlatformMotion by James Minney and seconded by Dennis Carpenter to to recommend the use of i-Ready from Curriculum Associates as our benchmark and screener platform. Motion carried. (8:04 pm)
    7. WVU Extension Service Roane County Budget RequestDennis Carpenter motioned to approve the budget request for office staff, the AmeriCorps summer workers, and the travel, which would be $14,000 and we approve the agent salary match, pending the hire of an agent by September 15, 2024, of $6,000. This motion was rescinded.Motion by Dennis Carpenter and seconded by James Minney to approve the funding for WVU Extension for a total amount of $14,000. Motion carried. (8:51 pm)Motion by James Minney and seconded by Daris Harper to approve $8,500 for an agent salary match pending WVU hiring an agent prior to November 1, 2024 and payments to be prorated quarterly based on the date of hire.   6. Reports of Committees
    1. Roane-Jackson Technical Center Administrative Council (May 21, 2024)An employee disciplinary matter was considered, which resulted in a 10-day suspension. The water plant project has been extended due to delays on the part of MonPower. The project for Building E is ready, pending approval of US Fish and Wildlife Service due to the removal of 4 trees possibly affecting the habitat of a bat.
  7. Superintendent's RemarksI attended a Title IX training with Bowles Rice earlier today. We will need to update our policy before the federal deadline of August 1st. Construction updates: The new SMS is on pace with a working fire alarm and working intercom. Networking is in progress. At RCHS, HVAC units are mostly completed. The gym HVAC will not be available until we have the big cranes in June. Lastly, tomorrow is the last day of school for kids and tomorrow night is RCHS Graduation at 7:00 pm.
