Policy 650 - Gifts, Grants, and Bequests
Adopted on June 22, 2023
Effective July 1, 2023
The Board of Education is duly appreciative of public interest in and good will toward the schools manifested through gifts, grants, and bequests. The Board reserves the right, however, to specify the manner in which gifts are made; to define the type of gift, grant, or bequest which it considers appropriate; and to reject those which it deems inappropriate or unsuitable. If accepted, the Board will attempt to carry out the wishes of the donor.
All gifts, grants, or bequests having a value of more than $5,000 shall be accepted or rejected by the Board. The Superintendent may accept or reject for the Board gifts of lesser value.
Gifts, grants, and bequests shall become the property of the Board and will be subject to use by the County as determined by the policies and administrative guidelines applying to all properties, equipment, materials, and funds owned by the Board.
Any equipment proposed to be purchased by a parent organization for use in the school or at a County-related event shall be submitted to the Board, prior to purchase, so it can determine if the County would incur any liability by its use.
The Board reserves the right to not accept such liability and thus deny the use of the equipment by students or school system employees.
Naming of School Facilities
From time-to-time, the Board of Education may wish to commemorate a school or County facility by means of a plaque or naming the facility after a person. Such commemoration shall be reserved only for those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the enhancement of education generally or the County in particular or to the well-being of the County, community, State or nation, as determined by the Board.
Any employee of the County thus honored must be deceased or no longer employed by the County prior to the Board's selection of his/her name for a plaque or for the naming of a facility.
Permanent Signage and Recognitions
Any permanent signage and/or recognitions affixed at Board facilities, displayed on real property, social media account(s), and/or website(s) of the Board, and/or provided to individuals using funds under the control of the Board, its schools, or school-affiliated organizations must be submitted to the Superintendent for approval by the Board prior to any public announcement or display or related expenditure of funds.
