Policy AG 220iii - Homework

Effective February 7, 2019

1. Homework should be a properly planned part of the curriculum, extending and reinforcing the learning experience of the school.
2. Students should be provided ample time to begin homework assignments in class while the classroom teacher is available to provide assistance.
3. Students are expected to have in place the necessary skills and understanding to be successful completing the assignment independently prior to its assignment.
4. Homework should help students learn by providing practice in the mastery of skills, experience in data gathering, integration of knowledge, and an opportunity to remediate learning problems.
5. Teachers should explain the desired outcome of homework assignments to students and how the assignments relate to relevant content standards and objectives.
6. In order to be viewed as purposeful to students, homework should be reviewed in a timely manner.
7. Homework should help develop the student's sense of responsibility by providing an opportunity for the exercise of independent work and judgment.
8. The school, home, and student must share this responsibility in order for homework to be both valuable and effective. Home and school must instill in students the ultimate responsibility.
9. The school will work with parents to promote proper standards for responsibility.
10. The number, frequency, and degree of difficulty of homework assignments should be based on the ability and needs of the student and take into account other activities which make a legitimate claim on the student's time.
11. The following is intended to be used as a guide based on an average student's ability. Exact times will vary according to ability level and how well time is utilized.

12. It is expected that the workload for Advanced Placement, dual-credit, and honors courses exceed that of other high school courses.
13. As a valid educational tool, homework should be assigned with clear direction and its produce carefully evaluated.
14. At all times, homework must be judiciously assigned and students informed exactly what is assigned and when it is due to be completed and returned.
15. Instructional practices shall be in place that assure homework is reviewed and feedback provided to students.
16. The schools should recognize the role of parents by suggesting ways in which parents can assist the schools in helping a student carry out assigned responsibilities.
17. The teacher and/or school shall communicate to parents specific strategies that assist students in completion of homework (i.e., having a quiet area in which to work, assigned a designated homework time).
18. The school shall provide guidance to parents for contacting the principal or teacher with questions about a student's homework. Principals and teachers participating in such communication shall restrict this to the use of official lines of communication, including face-to-face conversations, school phones, K12 email addresses, and Schoology.
19. Homework should always serve a valid learning purpose; it should never be used as a punitive measure.
20. Per WV Code 18-2A-5 (d), homework shall not require the use of reference materials or technology tools not available to students at home unless time is provided during the school day to complete such homework.
21. Homework shall comprise only a minimal portion of a student's grade for a grading period (not more than 10%), except that homework assigned to complete tasks which were not completed during the school day and for which sufficient time was given during the school day to complete them shall be not considered under this guideline.
