Policy AG 223i - Substitution of Required Courses for High School Graduation

Adopted on July 6, 2020

Effective July 6, 2020

1. Any course offered as an "honors" level of a required course for high school graduation shall be permitted as a substitute for that course.
2. AP English Language shall be permitted as a substitute for English 11.
3. AP English Literature shall be permitted as a substitute for English 12.
4. AP United States History shall be permitted as a substitute for United States History or United States History Comprehensive.
5. AP Government and Politics shall be permitted as a substitute for Civics.
6. AP Biology shall be permitted as a substitute for Biology.
7. Any course offered as dual-credit with an institution of higher education and that provides an opportunity for the student to earn college credit will be evaluated to determine what, if any, required course(s) may be permitted to be substituted by the dual enrollment course. This evaluation shall be done by comparing the state-approved content standards for the required course(s) with the content standards and objectives of the dual enrollment course to determine alignment.
8. Any college-credit bearing course taken prior to a student's high school graduation and not part of the Board's dual-credit programs may be substituted for a graduation requirement(s) upon evaluation of the course and its comparability to the high school curriculum. In general, college-credit bearing courses which represent fundamentals courses in a particular area may substitute for a graduation requirement(s) in specific areas (e.g., an English 101 course may substitute for English 12), but more specific courses may only be applied toward elective requirements.
