Policy AG 223ii - Alternative Means to Earn High School Credit

Credit earned prior to 9^th grade - The following course(s) shall be offered to students prior to enrollment in ninth grade for the purpose of earning high school credit: Spanish I. Nothing in these guidelines should construe a requirement that a student be permitted to enroll in this course(s) if the student's school is unable to support this course(s) for a reason(s) including but not limited to lack of a certified teacher, lack of sufficient student interest to constitute a reasonable class, or interference with other requirements of a student's current program of study.
Embedded credit - No opportunities for earning additional credit(s) through the completion of one or more other credits shall be available.
College-credit-bearing courses - A student who enrolls in and passes a college-credit-bearing course not offered through the Board's dual-credit programs may request to have such course substitute for a graduation requirement(s) by submitting such a request in writing to the school principal. Prior to receiving approval for such a request, the student must also provide to the school principal an official transcript showing completion of the course. For the purposes of GPA and class rank, if applicable, college-credit-bearing courses taken outside of the Board's dual-credit programs shall not be considered in such calculations and, if a graduation requirement(s) is substituted, shall be recorded on the student's high school transcript as being for-credit-only.
West Virginia Virtual School - A student who wishes to enroll in a course(s) not offered in his/her school but are available through the West Virginia Virtual School may be provided to earn high school credit under the following conditions:
A student shall be enrolled in such a course(s) under the West Virginia Virtual School if and only if he/she demonstrates sufficient mastery of content in pre-requisite and/or foundational courses and the ability to manage assignments and studies in a self-directed, self-motivated fashion.
Unless the course(s) is provided as a substitute for a requirement in a student's current program of study or as the result of a determination under an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), the student and/or student's parent(s) or guardian(s) shall be responsible for any and all costs associated with enrollment in such a course(s), including any materials and/or equipment.
Credit for such a course(s) shall be awarded only upon completion of the course(s) under the requirements provided by the West Virginia Virtual School and/or its instructor(s). The grade assigned to this course(s) shall be that which is assigned by the West Virginia Virtual School and/or its instructor(s).
A student enrolled in such a course(s) shall be provided sufficient time during the school day to complete such a course so long as this does not interfere with completion of the student's current program of study.
